The 2016 season will see changes in the tyre regulations, giving the teams more freedom regarding choice of tyre compounds. Pirelli will be offering 3 tyre compounds, as well as wet tyres, for the teams to use throughout the weekend. Currently, the teams only have a choice between 2.
Each team will be given 13 sets of tyres for each driver over the weekend. This is the same amount as in 2015. However, two sets of these will be mandatory and chosen by Pirelli – the same for every team. A third, softer set will also be given to each team but can only be used in Q3.
The teams will then be given free choice for the remaining 10 sets – they are allowed to chose different compounds for each driver. They will still have to give tyres back after practice sessions, as follows:
- 1 set after first 40 minutes of FP1
- 1 set after FP1
- 2 sets after Fp2
- 2 sets after FP3
The difference is that they will now be able to decide which tyres they give back at this time, they will then have six sets remaining plus a set for Q3.
The two compulsory sets given by Pirelli at the start of the weekend must not be given back after practice sessions and at least one set must be used within the race.
Pirelli are also offering a 5th tyre compound, ultrasoft, which is the softest tyre they will have available and will have a purple marking on the sidewall.
