Despite still being the clear leaders, Mercedes are becoming under threat from the other teams. The engine upgrade for Red Bull could pit them in a winning position again this weekend and new parts for Ferrari could also bring them closer to the silver arrows. To add to this, rain forecast on Sunday will make for an exciting race.
With just two tenths separating the top 3, Hamilton took his fifth Canadian pole. Rosberg was less than a tenth of a second behind, with Vettel the closest challenger to the silver arrows. In the damp conditions, Sainz was caught out in Q2, making contact with the famous wall of champions and ending his qualifying session prematurely.
A second consecutive victory for Hamilton means he closes the gap in the championship to just 9 points. A brilliant race of strategy kept him ahead of Vettel, who got into the lead on the opening lap. A tough race for Rosberg meant he failed to get on the podium – stuck behind the Red Bull of Verstappen in the final 10 laps.
