Last year, Singapore was the race where Mercedes’ dominance was shattered. This year they expect a challenge from Red Bull and Ferrari, with the former perhaps the favourites for the win. But the challenging street circuit is unforgiving with even the smallest mistake punished so it requires a perfect performance to claim victory.
Rosberg seals pole position with an impressive lap in the final session of qualifying. After making multiple mistakes on his lap, Hamilton dropped behind Ricciardo and will start the race down in third. Missing part of Q2 with a technical issue, he was on the back foot before the weekend really got underway.
Hanging on to victory by half a second, Rosberg retakes the championship lead. Starting on pole, Rosberg led from the start but was put under pressure in the final laps, with Ricciardo gaining over two seconds a lap. The Red Bull driver just missed out on the win, running out of laps to pass Rosberg. Forced to settle for third, Hamilton struggled with brakes for the whole race and was just able to keep ahead of Raikkonen.
