Vettel beats Verstappen to pole position by a narrow margin. Fastest at the start of Q3, Verstappen was disappointed to miss out on the chance to take his first pole of his career. Hamilton finished off the front row, with third position.
An engine failure in FP3 meant that Gasly was unable to take part in qualifying as his car was not ready to run. This left just four places remaining in the drop zone.
The Mercedes pair set the pace in Q1 on the ultrasofts, with their rivals on the slower supersofts. Meanwhile, Alonso showed impressive form to finish the session fifth.
Haas struggled in the session, with both drivers beaten by the Saubers. Neither team saw their drivers escape the drop zone, although Wehrlein had looked close.
Mercedes and Ferrari looked dominant early on in the session but then Verstappen set a brilliant lap to go half a second clear of his rivals.
Engine issues continued for Toro Rosso, but this time with the other car. Brendon Hartley suffered a loss of power on his run, ending his session early. With neither Vandoorne or Alonso taking part due to their grid penalties, only two of the remaining drivers would fail to reach the top ten.
The fight was between William and Force India, with Renault safely into the final session. In the end, it was both Williams drivers who failed to make it through.
Going into the final session, it was incredibly close for pole position, with Vettel, Verstappen and Hamilton all looking like they could take it. On the first runs, Verstappen was comfortably quicker, with an advantage of over two tenths to his closest rivals.
However, a great lap from Vettel put his 0.086 seconds ahead of the Dutchman. Verstappen failed to improve on his time, so had to settle for second place. Hamilton was a long way off the pace in the end, missing out on pole by over 4 tenths.
Bottas finished fourth, ahead of Raikkonen and Ocon. Ricciardo was disappointed with 7th, almost a second off what his teammate Verstappen managed. The two Renaults showed good pace, Hulkenberg and Sainz finishing 8th and 9th respectively. Perez was hoping to put in a strong performance in front of his home crowd so was disappointed to end the session 10th.
Further engine penalties for McLaren mean that Alonso will serve a 20-place grid drop and Vandoorne 35. Gasly also has a 15-place penalty for power unit changes as well.
Therefore, the provisional grid for tomorrow’s race is:
Vettel, Verstappen; Hamilton, Bottas; Raikkonen, Ocon; Ricciardo, Hulkenberg; Sainz, Perez; Massa, Stroll; Hartley, Ericsson; Wehrlein, Magnussen; Grosjean, Alonso; Gasly, Vandoorne
