Hamilton beat Rosberg by just over a tenth of a second to take pole position at Silverstone. Williams managed to get in 3rd and 4th, ahead of both Ferraris on the grid. Hulkenberg proved that they have improved the performance of the car taking 9th, with the new updates. For McLaren, however, it was a tough session and they could only manage 17th and 18th.
In Q1, both Mercedes drivers made it into the next session using just the hard compound tyres. Ferrari and Williams went onto the medium tyres, and Raikkonen was fastest in the session. Felipe Nasr was just pushed out of Q2, in 16th. Both McLarens also failed to reach the next session and will start in 17th and 18th. As usual, the Manor drivers were at the back in 19th and 20th.
Rosberg was fastest in Q2, over 3 tenths faster than Lewis Hamilton who struggled to get a good lap together. Raikkonen just squeezed through in 9th but Perez was the first to be eliminated after his time was disallowed due to track limits. Neither Grosjean or Lotus made it into the top ten. Verstappen struggled with a lack of traction and could only manage to get 13th. Sauber driver, Marcus Ericsson was 15th.
A strong opening lap for Hamilton in Q3 put him at the top immediately, a 1:32.248. Rosberg was unable to beat this and could only get a 1:32.361s, 0.113 seconds slower than Lewis. Massa and Bottas took the second row for Williams to beat both Ferrari drivers. Vettel took 5th, ahead of Raikkonen who will line up 6th for the race. Kvyat was 7th, beating Ricciardo who was 10th after his lap was disallowed. 8th was Sainz and Hulkenberg 9th.
So, can Lewis win from pole, or will Rosberg beat him to the finish?
