Lewis Hamilton claims his fourth win of the season at Montreal. Rosberg was 2.285 seconds behind his teammate. Bottas managed to get Williams their first pole position of the season with a great race, beating Kimi Raikkonen who finished fourth. It was a tough race for McLaren with neither driver making the end. Vettel and Massa both made their way through the field to finish 5th and 6th.
Hamilton maintained the lead throughout the race, only behind after pitting. Despite having to conserve fuel, he managed to keep Rosberg behind who had to manage brake temperatures. Vettel and Massa both got good results after having to work through the field. Vettel quickly made his way through the pack and on lap 7 was already part of a battle for 11th place. But a slow stop put him right at the back and he had to start again. He managed to get into 5th place by the end of the race but was unable to catch his team mate Kimi Raikkonen.
McLaren had a poor day, with both drivers retiring from the race. The only other retirement was that of Roberto Merhi with a broken drive shaft.
Mercedes
Lewis Hamilton P1, Nico Rosberg P2
The Mercedes pair dominated the race Rosberg, in second, was over 30 seconds ahead of Massa in third. Both drivers did have to manage fuel and Rosberg, following Hamilton had some problems cooling his brakes. However, they both had a trouble-free race and gave Mercedes another 1-2 and extended their lead in the constructors’ championship.
Ferrari
Kimi Raikkonen P4, Sebastian Vettel P5
Raikkonen lost the chance of getting a podium finish with a spin at the hairpin after his pit stop. It was disappointing for Ferrari to lose the chance of a podium finish from this incident which happened in the same way here last year. Vettel, starting in 18th, spent most of the race fighting through the pack. He took an early pit stop, which put him right at the back but he managed to pass easily in DRS zones on track. He almost collided with Hulkenberg whilst attempting to overtake him but fortunately managed to avoid a collision.
Williams
Valtteri Bottas P3, Felipe Massa P6
After a tough qualifying, Massa had a good race on Sunday. He worked his way up from 15th into 6th, a one-stop strategy working well for him. Bottas, too, had a great race and beat Kimi Raikkonen to finish on the podium. The team think they will be able to challenge for podiums in the next few races, after the disappointment of Monaco.
Red Bull
Daniil Kvyat P9, Daniel Ricciardo P13
A tough race for the Red Bull team, with both drivers unable to score good results. Kvyat managed to get two points but struggled against the Mercedes-powered cars ahead. Daniel Ricciardo was unable to finish in the top ten and said:
“It’s been a strange weekend for me and I am a little confused about today’s race. I was lacking pace and we are not sure why. There was nothing that felt especially wrong but we just couldn’t get any pace out of the car…”
Toro Rosso
Carlos Sainz P12, Max Verstappen P15
Also struggling for pace were Toro Rosso, lacking power from the Renault engine. Neither driver made the top ten, so it was a very disappointing race for the team.
Force India
Nico Hulkenberg P8, Sergio Perez P11
Huldenberg could have finished in sixth place in the race, but lost a lot of time after spinning to avoid contact with Vettel, who was overtaking him. However, he managed to still finish within the top ten and score some important points for the team. Perez was unable to find the pace to finish in the points but managed to beat Ricciardo and Sainz.
Lotus
Pastor Maldonado P7, Romain Grosjean P10
Maldonado had his best race of the season to finish in 7th and was pleased with the performance of the car. Grosjean also made it into the points but would have had a better result had he not collided with Will Stevens whilst lapping him. He got a puncture from the collision but was luckily very near the pit entrance when the collision occurred. Grosjean was given a five second penalty, which didn’t affect his overall result and 2 penalty points.
Sauber
Marcus Ericsson P14, Felipe Nasr P16
Sauber struggled for pace in the race and neither driver managed to achieve a great result. Nasr also had issues with his brakes overheating so lost lap time to prevent further braking issues.
McLaren
Jenson Button DNF, Fernando Alonso DNF
An exhaust issue was the cause for both drivers’ retirements although they were unrelated. Alonso was extremely disappointed to have a third non-finish in a row and was frustrated during the race about the lack of pace.
Manor
Will Stevens P17, Roberto Merhi DNF
Will Stevens managed to finish the race, after being hit by Grosjean and breaking his front wing. Merhi had a broken driveshaft so retired from the race.
