The FIA have introduced a new qualifying format for F1, which could be introduced as early as this year. The new system will see the slowest drivers eliminated every 90 seconds.
The purpose of the rule change is to make the sessions more unpredictable and interesting for the fans. Q1 will last 16 minutes, with the slowest driver being eliminated after 7 minutes. Every 90 seconds from then, whoever is slowest will be knocked out until 7 drivers are eliminated.
Q2 will be 15 minutes, with the slowest being knocked out after 6 minutes, and four more at 90 second intervals until the session ends.
Just 8 drivers will make it through to Q3, which will last 14 minutes. The slowest driver will be eliminated after the first 5 minutes and every 90 seconds from then until just 2 remain. They will have just 90 seconds in order to claim pole.
