Hamilton takes title lead with win in Monza

September 3, 2017

Mercedes dominated in Monza, with Hamilton leading Bottas in a 1-2. With Vettel third, he loses the title lead but, with only 3 points in it, it is all still to play for in the final half of the season.

Hamilton commanded the race right from the start, with his teammate Bottas climbing to second by lap 3 – despite a poor getaway. He lost a position to Raikkonen at the first corner but retook the place later in the lap. He then passed Stroll and Ocon in quick succession for second place, where he remained for the majority of the race.

Ferrari had no response for Mercedes, with Vettel finishing almost half a lap down on Lewis Hamilton. Meanwhile, Ricciardo made excellent progress from 16th to work his way up to fourth. Switching to supersofts on lap 37, it looked as if he may be able to catch Vettel as he was running a lot quicker. But the 12 second deficit was too much in the end and he had to settle for 4th.

Raikkonen took fifth, a long way off the top four but well clear of the Force India and Williams battle. Ocon ended up finishing at the front of the pack for 6th, with Stroll 7th despite a late charge from teammate Massa. Perez had to settle for 9th, but just 3.6 seconds separated the four.

After an amazing start, Verstappen gained 5 places to be running 8th. But then him and Massa made slight contact at turn one which punctured his tyres. He dropped right to the back and had to make an additional stop. Despite this, he made it into the points, taking tenth place in the closing stages of the race.

Ericsson and Alonso both retired late in the race, with technical issues. An incident between Alonso and Palmer, where the latter cut the corner, annoyed Alonso even when Palmer was handed a 5-second penalty. He also failed to finish the race, along with Vandoorne who suffered an engine failure.
