With victory in Hungary, Hamilton now heads the championship standings for the first time this season. In a fairly uneventful race, he took the lead at the first corner as Rosberg was put under threat from the Red Bulls behind. In the end, Rosberg finished an unchallenged 2nd, with Ricciardo holding on to 3rd ahead of Vettel.
A good start for Hamilton saw him overtake Rosberg at the start. Going into the first corner, Ricciardo managed to pass Rosberg also and dropped the polesitter to 3rd. At one stage it looked as if he may drop further behind, with Verstappen coming close to making a pass also. However, Rosberg fought back and took back second with a good move around the outside at turn two.
The Red Bulls mounted a challenge to the Mercedes early on in the race, but hopes of victory soon faded as the race progressed. Vettel was the first of the front runners to pit, this proving advantageous as he came out ahead of Verstappen. The Dutchman, who pitted two laps later, had a disappointing race, emerging from the pits after his first stop behind the Ferrari of Raikkonen, who was yet to stop. Stuck behind him for many laps, he lost a great deal of time to those ahead.
Ricciardo attempted to undercut the Mercedes by pitting early, but the advantage of fresh tyres soon faded, as Mercedes kept their drivers out on the supersofts. When they did eventually pit, both stops were perfect and they came out ahead of the Red Bull.
Hamilton struggled more on the soft tyres, allowing Rosberg and Ricciardo to get closer, his teammate even coming within DRS range at one point. However, was unable to mount a real challenge. Ricciardo was able to close up on the Mercedes in his second stint before pitting at the halfway point leaving him to complete a long stint on the soft tyres.
Final stops for Mercedes took place on laps 41 and 42, with Rosberg refusing to give up on victory. Right until the end, Rosberg stayed within three seconds of his teammate, keeping the pressure on Hamilton to the chequered flag. At one point, he almost made it past after Hamilton was stuck behind the backmarker of Gutierrez, who failed to allow the leading driver past. He was handed a drive-through penalty.
Meanwhile, both Red Bulls came under pressure from Ferrari. Ricciardo was able to hold off Vettel in the closing stages of the race, despite the Ferrari driver coming within one second of him. He took third place. Behind, Verstappen managed to stay ahead of Raikkonen after a race long battle between the two. On lap 57 the pair made contact as Raikkonen attempted a pass. The Finn blamed Verstappen as he believed he had made more than one defensive move but the stewards cleared him of any wrongdoing.
Alonso took a strong 7th for McLaren, but his teammate endured an awful race and failed to finish with brake problems. Eighth place went to Sainz, ahead of Bottas and Hulkenberg to round out the top ten. Palmer almost scored his first points in F1, but a spin in the closing stages dropped him to a disappointing 12th.
