Heavy rain and stormy conditions on Saturday meant that the qualifying had to be postponed until the Sunday. It ran in rainy conditions and, due to the weather, Q3 was cancelled. Taking the results from Q2 for the grid, Rosberg will start on pole, and Hamilton second. Both Ferrari drivers have 10 place penalties for a new engine and will start 13th and 18th.
Q1 began in very wet conditions and just 5 minutes into the session, Sainz had yet another crash. However, this was much less serious than the one in Sochi and the session soon restarted, with Hamilton currently top. But the conditions improved nearer the end of the session and Rosberg got the fastest time, with Ricciardo beating Hamilton for second. Eliminated in Q1 were the two Manors, the two Saubers and Sainz.
Improved track conditions for Q2 saw the two Mercedes drivers at the front, Rosberg 1 tenth quicker than Hamilton. Ricciardo and Kvyat were just behind the pair, followed by Vettel. Soon, the rain began to fall faster and the conditions became very tough and dangerous. Cars were aquaplaning on some parts of track and drivers complained about the conditions on the radio. Nobody could improve on their times, so Alonso, Bottas, Grosjean, Button and Maldonado were eliminated.
Q3 was cancelled due to the rain and this means the Q2 results will determine the grid. Both Ferrari drivers had grid penalties, Bottas had a gearbox penalty and Stevens had a 20 place penalty also. This means the grid will be: Rosberg, Hamilton; Ricciardo, Kvyat; Perez, Hulkenberg; Massa, Verstappen; Alonso, Grosjean; Button, Maldonado; Vettel, Ericsson; Nasr, Bottas; Rossi, Raikkonen; Stevens, Sainz.
