Teams Reject Aggregate Qualifying

April 7, 2016

All eleven teams have objected to the aggregate qualifying system proposed after criticisms of the elimination format. They have written a unanimous letter stating they dislike the current format, don’t want to try out the aggregate system and would like to revert to the 2015 system.

Ecclestone changed qualifying this year to the elimination format in order to spice up the racing and create unpredictability but received criticisms from fans, teams and drivers. This system resulted in an empty track at the end of each qualifying session and did very little to improve the spectacle.

Despite all teams voting against it, it was kept for Bahrain as the teams weren’t offered the chance to go back to the 2015 format. Then, this week another new format was proposed.

The aggregate qualifying system would be in the same format as last year but the two fastest laps for each driver would be added together, rather than a single lap.

However, the teams have now expressed their dislike for this idea and want to revert back to 2015. But they may not get this as an option which means that the elimination format may remain for China.
